I’ve lived in Melbourne for three years now and in those three years, I’ve come to think of several bookshops as my little homes away from home. I often get asked by people who are planning to visit Melbourne which bookshops they should check out while they are here, and seeing as it was Love Your Bookshop Day (LYBD) recently, I thought it was about time I put some of my favourite bookshops into a blog post!
This is obviously not an exhaustive list of great bookshops in Melbourne – there are way too many for me to list! But these are the bookshops that were part of my bookshop crawl on this year’s LYBD and the bookshops I highly recommend to you!
Located at: 197-203 Little Lonsdale St
Embiggen Books has a special place in my heart. It offers everything I could ever want in a bookshop – gorgeous displays, quality books, bookshelf ladders, friendly staff and a little coffee cart that serves dark roast and hot chocolate. This is a bookshop with character and heart, and that’s why I’ve put it as number one on my list!
Located at: 60 Bourke Street
Taking snaps inside The Paperback Bookshop, especially on LYBD, was quite the task! The Paperback is one of those bookshops where every space is utilised for the storage of books – it’s a booklovers paradise because there are books in every available nook and cranny! The Paperback Bookshop holds both new release titles, second-hand books and lots of lovely bookish goodies.
Located at: 86 Bourke Street
This Love Your Bookshop Day was my first visit to Hill of Content! I’ve been meaning to go for years because I’ve been following them on Instagram for a while and people always rave about the shop – it lived up to the hype. Set on two levels, Hill of Content is chock full of fantastic books and the staff were really friendly.
Located at: 129-131 Therry St Queen Victoria Market
Foodies will adore Books for Cooks, especially because it is right next door to the Queen Victoria Markets! Books for Cooks differs from the other shops on this list because it exclusively sells new and used books about food, cooking and baking. It is also just a gorgeous shop with a lovely vibe, perfect for spending an hour or two browsing the shelves and reading in a cosy armchair.
