Woah, Red Queen, whatta ride!

Published by the wonderful Hachette this fantastical fiction is set in a world divided by blood type. Silver bloods are the elite class, with each person holding a specific mystical ability. Red bloods are commoners and are treated as slaves by the Silvers.

The narrative follows Mare Barrow, a Red-blooded pick-pocketing girl who, by mere coincidence, discovers she has certain ‘Silver’ qualities. She is suddenly thrust into the limelight and forced to dwell among the most Royal of the Silver elite – the people she passionately detests. As Mare struggles to forget her previous life and much-loved family, she also realises her place within Silver society is exactly where she needs to be. For there is a rebellion uprising of Reds and Mare’s unique inside knowledge of the Silver castle is suddenly extremely valuable.

There are many unexpected twists within the narrative of Red Queen and I really enjoyed the accessibility of the reading style – it’s approximately 400 pages long and I flew through it! There are some supremely lovable characters in this story and the fantastical imagery captures the reader’s imagination.

If you’re a fan of the Hunger Games, Divergent, Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings, you’re going to love Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard.
